2027: Sowunmi: Populism is insufficient

According to Segun Showunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria has reached a stage when populism is insufficient to win a president.

Showunmi said this on Thursday in an appearance on the Arise Television program “Prime Time.”

Nigerians would need to scrutinize what they are told, he said.

His statement comes as several political parties prepare for their primary elections in advance of the nation’s general elections the following year.

“We have been complaining a lot because we attempted to run a populist agenda for former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Populism is no longer sufficient at this stage. How have you performed in the past? Don’t brag about your competence.

“We have to look at the economic credentials of the aspirant if we say our problem is the economy and how to make the economy work for the people,” he stated.
