Many Nigerian and African artists are afraid to reveal their true selves – Davido

David Adeleke, a Nigerian Afrobeats sensation better known as Davido, has clarified the reason he holds the title of most-followed African artist on social media.

The ‘With You’ hitmaker clarified that his open-mindedness and interaction with fans helped him gain more followers than his peers.

He asserted that many of his colleagues fear revealing their true selves on social media.

During a recent chat with BET Talks, Davido mentioned, “I’m the most-followed African artist across social media because I’m free with my fans. At the start of my career, I was quite open. I used to create vlogs where I showcased my life to others. A lot of artists from Nigeria and Africa often fear to reveal their true selves.

I believe that my life in America contributed to my development, too. As my mind is somewhat open. I’m not claiming that my people lack knowledge. However, let’s observe them [other artists] posing for photos in slippers and shorts while relaxing at home. There are artists who will not do that. They would want to switch to something beneficial. However, I still view myself as an ordinary person. I wear shorts and slippers when I take pictures. And when it’s time to party, believe me, I know how to party.

Upon my return to Nigeria, I noticed that certain celebrities tend to overthink and overdo things. I was like, no, just stay calm. Simply go along with it. It seems to me that it ought to be like that.
