A well-known TikToker, Murja Kunya, has been sentenced to six months in prison for Naira abuse by a Federal High Court in Kano.
On Wednesday, the Kano Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a conviction and sentencing of the social media influencer in front of Justice Simone Amobeda at the Kano Federal High Court.
Kunya was taken into custody on the accusation of having sprayed Naira notes for amusement while in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano.
In January 2025, she was first detained for infringing the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which forbids the abuse and mutilation of the Naira.
The Commission granted the TikToker administrative bail while she awaits her arraignment in the Federal High Court in Kano.
She tried to escape the legal process by fleeing when it was time for her to appear in court.
On Sunday, March 16, 2025, Kunya was successfully re-arrested by EFCC operatives after weeks of intensive investigation and surveillance.
On May 20, 2025, she was subsequently arraigned and pleaded guilty to the amended single-count charge.
