Ismail Ahmed, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Youth Leader, has dismissed the possibility that Nigerians could openly ston President Bola Tinubu, APC leaders, and government officials in protest at the country’s current situation.
He asserts that there is still hope and that Nigerians would pay attention to their leaders and have faith in the system.
Ahmed made the submission Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television, when he discussed the Tinubu administration’s performance during its first two years in power, according to Naija News.
To avoid getting stoned, the party stalwart responded that President Tinubu and the APC have prevented Nigeria from becoming bankrupt when the anchor asked him to explain what the APC-led government has done for Nigerians over the last two years.
According to him, the current administration has not destroyed the hopes and expectations of Nigerians, and even though certain citizens’ expectations have not been fulfilled, the government still has two more years to fulfill its commitments.
Ahmed defended the Tinubu administration’s increased borrowing by pointing out that the money isn’t being misappropriated or embezzled but is instead going toward the nation’s infrastructure advancements, as evidenced by the completion of numerous significant projects.
According to him, despite complaints from some quarters about issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, and rising hunger in the country, which they attributed to the president’s ill-conceived policies, the APC-led Tinubu government has not performed poorly in its first two years in office.
“I think Nigerians will give us the benefit of the doubt and listen to us. It is not a dashed hope yet.
We have saved this country from bankruptcy. Everyone, be it a business corporate organization or a country, most especially, a country, has to run on a debt. Now debt can be a sustainable debt, can be a debt where you borrow to invest in your infrastructure, borrow to invest in your enabling structures, to be able to bring in more businesses so that people will get jobs, that’s one thing.
Borrowing money to spend, pay salaries, eat it, have corruption eat it away, and spend it on endlessly pointless things is another matter entirely. But as you are well aware, Buhari initiated the practice of borrowing money to invest in our infrastructure, which is what we are doing at the moment. Many infrastructure projects that appeared to be unfinished were completed by us. I don’t think we’re doing too badly, though, given what we’re doing everywhere under this government.
But in order for people to have a better grasp of what is happening in the nation, he emphasized the importance of keeping them better informed on government policies, activities, and programs.
