Senator Orji Kalu, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatization and represents Abia North in the National Assembly, has said that he will put off running for president until President Bola Tinubu has finished his second term.
Kalu asserted that the party is in charge and that he cannot challenge it, even if he wants to run for president. He pointed out that the party had already supported President Bola Tinubu for a second term, which would expire in 2031.
The lawmaker told reporters in Igbere, in the Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, on Tuesday that his presidential aspirations are on hold and will be resurrected during Tinubu’s second term in power.
“I am an APC member, and our party has endorsed President Tinubu with ease,” he said. Therefore, my ambition to become president is on hold for the time being since I am unable to oppose the party. The party is in charge. President Tinubu is enjoying the party’s dominance. “He will enjoy it and we will elect him President,” the statement reads. Who says I can’t run for president in God’s time if I still have the stamina and resources after President Tinubu in 2031? It is feasible.
The lawmaker added that if the public thought he was deserving of a second chance, he would run for the Abia North senatorial district seat in 2027.
He said, “2027, I will run for re-election for the Senate. I will run if our people find me worthy. A man who has done more than 187 roads in six years as a senator, and I have done more than 123 primary schools”.
Speaking on the performance of President Tinubu in the last two years, Kalu said, “I work closely with him. The President has done very well within two years. If we can give him the benefits of finishing another two years and doing another term, I think we will see a lot of changes in the economy”.
According to the Abia senator, the party did the right thing by pushing President Tinubu to do more, and his endorsement for a second term is not as hasty as others have suggested.
“The party made the right decision because we are in the midterm and we need to push the President to do more,” he said. We will fully back the incumbent president in his right to run for office again.
