On Tuesday, the atmosphere at APM Terminals Apapa, which is Nigeria’s largest container terminal, was invigorated by the arrival of “Kota Oasis,” the inaugural liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership to dock at a West African port.
Measuring 260 meters long and 46 meters wide, with a gross tonnage of 77,850, the vessel sails under the Singaporean flag and is owned by Pacific International Lines (PIL).
This vessel is the first of PIL’s new “O” class of ships — a line of dual-fuel container vessels with an 8,200 TEU capacity that can operate on LNG and, eventually, bio-methane to reduce carbon emissions even further. It is also the fifth ship in PIL’s fleet to be powered by LNG.
Fitted with Win-GD’s cutting-edge X-DF engines that incorporate Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER), “Kota Oasis” benefits from reduced methane slip and a decreased environmental impact.
