Residents of the building that fell along Adeniji Adele Road in the Isale Eko neighborhood of Lagos Island had previously received a quit notice but had disregarded it, according to a source with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, or LASEMA.
According to BASEMEDIA NEWS, the building fell early on Thursday morning, injuring multiple inhabitants and triggering an emergency reaction from the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and other rescue units.
The Lagos State Building Control Agency, or LASBCA, had long designated the building as distressed and scheduled for demolition before it finally collapsed, according to the LASEMA officer, who asked to remain anonymous.
“The building had been defused and marked by LASBCA a while back. It was clearly in a dangerous state. LASEMA responded promptly this morning after the incident,” the source stated.
The officer continued, “Our investigation reveals that quit notices were served to the occupants, but they refused to vacate the premises.”
Despite the fact that the continued excavation was being carried out by hand because of the close proximity and density of nearby structures, another agency source verified that no people were still trapped beneath the wreckage.
It has been challenging to bring in heavy machinery because of Lagos Island’s small building footprint. Fortunately, nobody is stuck at the moment, so we’re employing manual tactics for the time being,” the insider stated.
