The Senate’s public hearing on the 1999 Constitution revision will begin today in Lagos, according to Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central).
According to Bamidele, the exercise would spark conversations about national issues, such as plans for the establishment of state police, the creation of 18 new local government districts, and extensive electoral reforms.
The Senate has also scheduled concurrent public hearings in other geopolitical zones of the nation, with the exception of the North-West, in an attempt to guarantee inclusive participation.
The North-West hearing was postponed due to the death of Alhaji Aminu Dantata, a well-known Kano philanthropist and industrialist, who passed away on Saturday.
Senator Bamidele, who is also the Chairman of the South-West Zonal Constitution Review Committee, described the agenda for the two-day hearing in a statement issued yesterday.
He underlined that the forum gives Nigerians an essential place to voice their opinions on important matters influencing the country’s system of government.
