A crate containing more than 10,000 donkey genitals is intercepted by customs.

Along the Kaduna–Abuja road, a 40-foot container containing donkey genitals was intercepted, according to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

During a press conference and the formal transfer of the confiscated goods to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) at the NCS Government Warehouse in Karu, Abuja, on Thursday, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the Service’s National Public Relations Officer, announced this.

According to Maiwada, the interception occurred on Friday, June 5, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m., as a result of coordinated surveillance by members of the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) and Special Wildlife Office (SWO) and credible intelligence. The seizure, he said, underscores the ongoing danger of illicit wildlife trafficking along Nigeria’s transportation routes. After proper documentation and adherence to protocols, the handover was in accordance with legislative obligations and interagency cooperation.

“The seizure is not an isolated case,” he said. He said that the Customs Service has discovered and stopped multiple illegal wildlife trafficking activities around the country in the last 12 months. These include the capture of taxidermy specimens including lion mounts, zebra hides, and pangolin scales, as well as the rescue of African Grey Parrots, pangolins, monkeys, and tortoises.
