The power of the 2027 elections should stay in the south, according to Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s former vice presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
In an interview with Channels’ Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed reflected on his political career, citing times when he decided to withdraw from significant elections in order to promote national unity.
“I support the notion that the South will continue to hold power. As you may remember, I was motivated to run for president in 2019 and served as His Excellency Peter Obi’s vice presidential candidate in 2023.
“Before that, I attempted a governorship bid in Kaduna but chose to withdraw,” he said.
“I very much respect and reciprocate what I saw in Port Harcourt in 2018 there wasn’t a single candidate that could genuinely lay claim to the legacy of the Rivers, Niger and Benue. In 2023, the whole world witnessed that I did not contest a show of respect,” he said.
He continued by commending Nyesom Wike and Peter Obi for exercising restraint in spite of their political capital.
Wike and Peter Obi had the people, the resources, and the experience to challenge, but they set limits. That self-control and discipline are worthy of praise.
He said, “That is probably part of the reason why our good friend and boss Wike is doing what he says he is not doing in the PDP.”
