Billy Gillis-Harry, President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, or PETROAN, has stated that in order to maintain discipline and regulation in the industry, petrol tanker drivers must be members of a union.
Gillis-Harry made the case on Monday’s Sunrise show on Channels Television that tanker drivers and operators could act without accountability in the absence of union membership, which would result in inefficiency and losses for customers.
According to BASEMEDIA, because of a confrontation with Dangote Refinery, members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, or NUPENG, have closed down gasoline distribution across the country as of today, Monday, September 8.
In an interview with BASEMEDIA on Sunday, Williams Akporeha, the National President of NUPENG, stated that the action was in the nation’s best interests.
However, due to a dispute with Dangote Refinery, truck drivers rebelled against the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers’ (NUPENG) planned strike action. The president of PETROAN, meanwhile, stated that no one should be allowed to do as they please. “You could go to a station, pay N2,000 for petrol, and get only N800 if every retailer is just doing what they want,” he said. Since there is no regulation, there won’t be any penalties.
The president of PETROAN stated that although his organization is dedicated to helping the Dangote refinery succeed, effective stakeholder coordination is essential to guaranteeing value for Nigerians.
He asserts that unions such as the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) are crucial to preserving industry order. Drivers of tankers are not allowed to operate however they please. Tankers may not pass or products may not be delivered for days at a time, but NUPENG and PTD are doing a fantastic job of making sure these problems are appropriately handled,” he continued.
