Isaac Schmidt, a defender for Leeds United, is no longer qualified to play for the Nigerian Super Eagles.
This comes after the Switzerland Football Association defeated the Nigeria Football Federation, or NFF, in the competition for the Leeds United loanee’s international future.
Schmidt made his first appearance for Switzerland on Monday in a 3-0 victory over Slovenia at St. Jakob Stadium in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
A Nigerian mother and a Swiss-German father welcomed the 25-year-old into the world in Lausanne.
Before making his competitive debut for The Red Crosses versus Slovenia, Schmidt was qualified to play for the national teams of Germany and Nigeria.
He officially cap-tied Switzerland over Germany and Nigeria after coming off the bench to replace midfielder Silvan Widmer in the second half.
Prior to making cap-tying appearances for Switzerland, players like Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor were all eligible to play for Nigeria; Schmidt has now followed in their footsteps.
He is currently on loan from Leeds United to Werder Bremen of the German Bundesliga.
