The primary city of Abia State experienced a complete shutdown on Monday as inhabitants chose to halt their usual work and activities. This was done to express support for the #FreeNnamdiKanu demonstration, which is being led by activist Omoleye Sowore.
BASEMEDIA indicates that the thoroughfares were nearly vacant, with only a limited appearance of tricycles and a small number of cars.
All economic and business functions came to a complete halt. Stores, marketplaces, financial institutions (banks), fuel stations, and transport hubs (motor parks) remained closed.
In the same vein, educational institutions, encompassing both private and public schools, did not commence classes.
It was understood that some schools had previously, over the weekend, communicated with parents, advising them not to send their children or dependents to school on Monday due due to the anticipated #FreeKanu protest.
A line of vehicles carrying a combined security patrol was observed on Uwakala Road, likely overseeing the situation.
Vendors at the well-known Isigate market failed to appear to trade, leaving their merchandise and stalls fully covered.
The majority of the main avenues, such as Post Office/Abia Tower Junction, FMC/Bank Road Junction, and Umuahia, which our reporter visited, were deserted.
