Emirates airline has officially announced the resumption of its flights to Nigeria, marking the end of a suspension that lasted nearly two years.
• Key Reason for Suspension: The airline initially suspended operations because it was unable to repatriate funds (revenue from ticket sales) from Nigeria, a challenge that affected many foreign carriers due to foreign exchange scarcity. The UAE government subsequently stopped issuing visas to Nigerians in 2022.
• Official Confirmation: The announcement was made by Adnan Kazim, the airline’s Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer.
• Gratitude and Partnership: Kazim thanked the Nigerian government for its “partnership and support in re-establishing this route,” and expressed excitement to welcome passengers back on board.
• Diplomatic Resolution: The resumption follows a crucial meeting held in September last year between President Bola Tinubu and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, where matters relating to the flight and visa ban were discussed.
• Connectivity: Emirates, known for its extensive network, will reconnect Nigerian travelers to its hub in Dubai and onwards to more than 140 global destinations.
This decision signals a major step in restoring confidence and connectivity between the two nations, primarily facilitated by the government’s efforts to clear the backlog of foreign airlines’ trapped funds.
