Segun Adewale, a former Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a prominent member of the party, has firmly supported former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s bid for president in the 2027 elections.
According to Naija News, Adewale called Atiku the “Messiah” Nigeria needs to solve its problems and revitalize its faltering economy. He further emphasized that Atiku should not be told to leave the party or be dismissed politically.
Adewale’s support coincides with growing opposition within the PDP to Atiku’s presidential ambitions.
Atiku has received advice not to run on the party’s platform in 2027 from influential people including former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and former PDP Deputy National Chairman Bode George.
George recently demanded that Atiku leave the PDP immediately due to suspected anti-party activities, while Fayose threatened to block Atiku’s candidacy if he decided to run.
Adewale, however, denied these requests in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, claiming that Atiku is the best person to lead the nation toward development due to his expertise and leadership.
As one of the few politicians who is content, Atiku has been tried and tested, but he has never given up. In contrast to other politicians who merely seek to seize power in order to amass fortune, he is aware of Nigerian politics and our difficulties, Adewale stated.
Adewale went on to say that he was disappointed that Atiku’s strongest opponents were from within the PDP. He denounced party members who are against Atiku’s suggested alliance to overthrow the All Progressives Congress (APC) and put the PDP back in power.
Anyone within PDP saying Atiku should not contest in 2027 is working for the opposition and not for the party or the country. They are working for personal pockets, therefore, should not be listening to them,” Adewale asserted.
He further argued that the critics within the PDP were motivated by selfish interests rather than the good of the party or the nation. “All dissenting voices in our party are working for their stomach, not for Nigeria,” he added.
Adewale also dismissed the notion that opposition parties, including Peter Obi’s Labour Party, could single-handedly defeat the ruling APC.
“None of the opposition parties can defeat the ruling party single-handedly, not even Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party,” Adewale stated, emphasising the importance of unity within the opposition camp.
In light of the current political climate, Adewale called for a reform of Nigeria’s electoral system to ensure a fair and credible process.
He lamented his own experiences of alleged electoral malpractice in Lagos State, claiming that a flawed system had robbed him of victories in previous elections.
“It is not about how smart we are, but about the system. It is not about how popular you are, it is about the system. We must join hands to correct this before the 2027 polls,” Adewale urged.
Adewale addressed the general dissatisfaction among Nigerians over inadequate governance as he wrapped up his remarks. The electorate is ready for a change and a new style of leadership, he claimed.
“Nigerians are demanding a change and a breath of fresh air because they are fed up with bad governance,” he stated.
