Mobile courts have already been set up around the state for the prompt prosecution of offenders, and the Bauchi State Police Command has started enforcing tough laws against unregistered vehicles and drivers who use concealed or fake license plates.
The command stated that the effort, which aims to improve road safety and bolster security throughout the state, was implemented in response to a direction from Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Inspector-General of Police.
The command revealed that it had collaborated with the state judiciary to set up mobile courts in the five Area Command headquarters and other key areas throughout Bauchi metropolis in a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib.
The statement claims that the courts have started trying drivers who drive cars with invalid licenses, cover or hidden license plates, and vehicles with fictitious or unauthorised registration numbers.
Unregistered and unidentified automobiles pose significant security risks, according to the state’s Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, who also noted that these vehicles are regularly employed in crimes including kidnapping and armed robbery.
He clarified that rather than intimidating law-abiding drivers, the enforcement exercise was intended to protect lives and property.
The police commissioner issued a warning, stating that any car discovered to be in violation of the rules would be seized and that violators would face charges in mobile courts.
In accordance with applicable motor vehicle registration and licensing legislation as well as police regulations, he continued, penalties would include fines and other sanctions.
The directive advised drivers and car owners to make sure their license plates are displayed correctly, to regularise their vehicle paperwork, and to avoid hiding, changing, or defacing registration numbers.
Additionally, it stated that the enforcement operation would continue without compromise and urged locals to assist the authorities conducting the exercise. The police reiterated their dedication to upholding state security and combating illegal activity associated with the use of untraceable automobiles.
