The human rights organization, Save the Poor and Needy Charity Initiative (SPANCI), is demanding the prompt release of Adetunji Muritala Raji, a 38-year-old man detained by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 5, Edo State. SPANCI’s President, Comrade Yemi Ezekiel Bello, signed a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), stating that Raji’s imprisonment, ordered by Miss Alimi Adeyinka Nafisat, is illegal, unlawful, and violates the constitution. SPANCI claimed in the statement that Raji was arrested in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and transferred to Zone 5, Edo State, on November 18, 2025, and remains detained. The group urged the IGP to establish a committee to investigate the situation. The petition further detailed that their client was held at Zone 5, Edo State, from Tuesday, November 18, 2025, through Wednesday, November 19, 2025, and that he is being pressured to make a statement or sign a commitment favoring Miss Nafisat, a London resident who is reportedly arriving soon to make her demands before further action is taken. The petition cited the IGP’s previous warnings to the police against violating citizens’ fundamental rights and intervening in civil matters, emphasizing that the police’s role is for crime prevention and maintaining order, not for collecting debts or recovering money. SPANCI called for a serious investigation, punishment for anyone found guilty, the immediate release of Raji due to his unlawful detention, and for justice to be served visibly in the matter.
