After winning all three points in their league game against Liverpool, Manchester United has guaranteed their place in the group stage of the upcoming UEFA Champions League.
After missing out on the top European competition for two years, the Red Devils defeated the Reds 3-2 at Old Trafford.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Coady Gakpo cancelled early goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, but Mainoo scored the well-earned goal to guarantee Man United’s first double over Liverpool in ten years.
The home team seized the lead through Cunha, a Brazilian who scored his ninth goal of the season on six minutes after receiving a poorly cleared corner kick and slamming a deflected effort into the bottom corner on the second try. Michael Carrick’s team was out of the traps in attack mode. After 14 minutes, Sesko scored his 11th league goal of the year after turning the ball into the net with his body, giving United a two-goal lead.
Due to injury, Sesko was substituted for Amad Diallo at the beginning of the second half. A minute later, Liverpool capitalized on the Ivory Coast international’s error to cut the lead in half, with Szoboszlai scoring.
After cutting out Amad’s pass, the midfield player proceeded on a solo run that culminated with a low shot that rolled into the corner of the net for a 2-1 score after a minor deflection. On minute fifty-six, another mistake gave Liverpool another chance to tie the score. Cody Gakpotos scored 2-2 after Man United goalie Senne Lammens passed directly to a Liverpool player.
After Man United rallied, Mainoo scored the game-winning goal on minute 77, his first league goal of the year, with a well-placed effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area for 3-2.
With 35 games played so far this season, Manchester United has 64 points, six more than Liverpool and Aston Villa, who are tied for fourth place in the Premier League standings.
