The Niger Delta Power Holding Company is prepared to play a significant role in the Lagos State Electricity Market, according to Engineer Jennifer Adighije, Managing Director and CEO.
With roughly 2,000 megawatts of stranded power assets, NDPHC is strategically positioned to improve the supply of electricity in Lagos State, according to Adighije, who made this statement during a visit to Temitope George, the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).
Lagos currently receives about 1,000MW from the national grid, leaving a significant supply gap against the state’s estimated 12,000MW electricity demand, according to a statement from Emmanuel Ojor, Head of NDPHC’s Corporate Communications and Public Relations Department. Ojor also stated that NDPHC is ready to supply an additional 1,500MW to the state.
She claims that the company’s mandate includes infrastructure for transmission and distribution in addition to power generation.
“We have led power sector reforms over the years and helped close infrastructure gaps, which makes us the right candidate to partner with LASERC to drive access to electricity in Lagos,” she stated.
“It is well known that NDPHC has the largest power generation assets in sub-Saharan Africa,” the head of NDPHC continued. Unfortunately, we are only able to despatch between 400 and 500 MW per day despite having an installed capacity of approximately 4,000 MW. We obviously have a large amount of capacity that is stranded.
There is a significant gap between the supply and demand for energy, according to the most recent Lagos Electricity Market Report. We are working with LASERC to support the expansion and acceleration of distributed access to electricity in Lagos State because we want to play this role.
She emphasised that the business is prepared to close the short-term supply gap.
Temitope George, MD of LASERC, welcomed the NDPHC delegation and reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enhancing the state’s electricity supply.
George expressed the commission’s willingness to work with NDPHC to fulfil its mandate and praised the company for its investments in the power industry.
