During a week-long enforcement operation conducted throughout the state, the Lagos State Task Force seized 278 illicit commercial motorcycles, or “Okada.”
Operators that violated the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018’s prohibition on commercial motorbikes on highways and restricted routes were the focus of the enforcement action.
The operation came after a previous crackdown a few weeks prior and is a component of the state government’s continuous efforts to improve security and protect people and property in accordance with the renewed enforcement campaign spearheaded by Mr. Fatai Tijani, Commissioner of Police.
Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana School, Iyana-Iba, Idimu Road, Egbeda, Kola Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ijaiye in Ojokoro, Berger Bus Stop, Ojodu, Akowonjo Roundabout, Igando Bus Stop, LASU-Iba Road, and Pipeline Road in Idimu were among the areas covered during the operation.
The Task Force reports that a number of riders were arrested for operating on major highways and forbidden routes in violation of traffic and public safety laws.
The organization also claimed that some of the riders were captured hauling hazardous commodities, including petroleum products and gas cylinders, while others were spotted carrying school children and toddlers in unsafe conditions on major roadways
According to the terms of the 2018 transport law, authorities said that the seized motorcycles will go through legal proceedings for potential forfeiture to the Lagos State Government.
Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, the chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, stated that the enforcement action will go on until operators fully abide by the law.
He declared, “We will not be intimidated or fold our arms and allow people with criminal intent to overrun Lagos or surrender to their illegalities.”
