A boy who stole soft drinks on his birthday was given a three-month community service sentence.

An eighteen-year-old male in Adamawa State admitted that he stole soft drinks specifically to celebrate his birthday. The young man, identified as Aminu Abdulazeez from the Bazza community in Michika Local Government Area, disclosed that he took away a half crate each of Nutri Milk and Dudu mineral drinks to share with his friends for the celebration. He was subsequently arrested and detained after being tracked down while he was making additional preparations for the event. Aminu made this confession to the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee during a review visit to the Mubi Correctional Centre where he was being held. He had been committed to the facility after Area Court I Bazza found him guilty and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment or the option of paying a forty thousand Naira fine. Having been unable to pay the required fine, he was sent to the correctional centre last month. After reviewing his case, the Jail Delivery Committee, which is led by the state Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, modified his three-month confinement sentence to three months of community service. The committee issued an order for him to be returned to Bazza to perform community service for three months, which involves sweeping a public facility such as a health center or a police station.
