A forensic investigation into the death of former Ondo governorship candidate Akingboye is ordered by the Lagos CP.

A forensic investigation into the death of Mr. Bamidele Akingboye, a former candidate for governor of Ondo State, has been ordered by Lagos State Commissioner of Police Mr. Olohundare Jimoh.

The order came after a graphic image of Akingboye’s body went viral on social media, revealing obvious head injuries and raising doubts about the cause of death.

The politician reportedly died quietly in his Lagos home in Victoria Garden City, or VGC, on Wednesday.

However, the widely circulated image has sparked speculation about potential foul play.

Human rights groups have since urged the police to conduct a thorough, transparent, and trustworthy investigation to ascertain the cause of his passing.

CP Jimoh instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, or SCID, to handle the matter in a discreet manner, the command disclosed on Sunday. The command’s official X handle, @LagosPoliceNG, verified the development.

“The Commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, to discreetly investigate the death,” according to the statement.

The command claims that detectives from the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) unit went to the house where the body of the deceased politician was discovered.

Since then, the area has been cordoned off while forensic experts use cutting-edge equipment to gather and examine evidence.

In the November 2024 election for the governorship of Ondo, Akingboye, who represented the Social Democratic Party (SDP), lost to the incumbent, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
