The Wake-Wake Association of Taraba State has strongly condemned the alleged assault on Murtala Riki Riki, councillor for Mayo Gwoi Ward, who was reportedly attacked by thugs during a town hall meeting in Jalingo on Wednesday with Governor Agbu Kefas.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Umar Sani Bello, on Thursday, the association described the incident as a serious threat to democracy and public participation. The attack, which occurred at a forum meant for dialogue on development issues, was attributed to political thugs.
“Violence and intimidation have no place in our democracy,” the group stated, expressing concern over rising political aggression in public gatherings.
The association faulted the security arrangements at the meeting, saying the failure to protect participants allowed the incident to happen. It demanded the immediate setup of an independent and impartial committee to investigate the matter and identify those responsible.
It further urged Governor Kefas to act swiftly, stressing that the people of Taraba deserve leaders committed to peace, accountability, and the rule of law. The group warned that ignoring such acts of violence would further weaken public trust in the political process.
