According to lawyer Uwazuruike, strongman politics will bring about Nigeria’s destruction.

Lawyer and 2014 National Conference delegate, Goddy Uwazuruike, has warned that Nigeria risks destruction if the culture of strongman politics and authoritarian leadership continues unchecked.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Uwazuruike said: “Strongman politics and strongman mentality are still ongoing and will lead us to doom if not stopped.”

He contrasted the current political climate with the administrations of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umar Musa Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan, noting that during their time, both the ruling party and the opposition functioned effectively. In contrast, he said the past decade has been marked by an erosion of opposition, as many politicians have defected to the ruling party under the influence of strongman politics.

“Whatever the President wants, he gets. That’s what we’ve seen in this administration and the previous one,” Uwazuruike said, citing Rivers State as an example where presidential decisions are enforced without resistance.

He further criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, saying the expectations Nigerians had were ultimately dashed. On the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, Uwazuruike argued that conditions have worsened despite promises of renewal and reform.
