According to Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) current conflict is a group ego battle among party members rather than just involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Lawal stated that power conflicts and personal interests are the root cause of the PDP’s internal crisis during a media roundtable with journalists in Gusau on Wednesday.
Everyone has their own problems; Atiku Abubakar isn’t the only one. “He can’t handle it,” he said.
“The PDP has an internal issue, and we are actively working to resolve it. I believe it’s about people’s egos, no matter who they are,” he continued.
Governor Lawal rejected the idea that outside forces are exclusively to blame for the PDP crisis, despite some party members accusing President Bola Tinubu of supposedly influencing it from the outside.
The governor gave a direct response when asked if he thought of himself as a contributing factor to the issue: “Yes.”
Regarding Nigeria’s electoral system, Lawal said he hoped that free and fair elections could still be held there in spite of current structural problems.
“I will say yes because I experienced it,” he remarked, referring to his own experience in Zamfara. I prevailed in spite of the Federal Government’s might and all the influential people.
The election was free and fair. I became Zamfara State’s first elected PDP governor in this way. Therefore, it is possible for it to occur again; it is just a matter of time.
Lawal’s comments coincide with the PDP leadership’s continuous attempts to patch things up with irate members and reposition the party in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
