Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says that Nigerians generally oppose interference by foreign nations in the fight against insecurity.
Olawepo-Hashim stated this on Wednesday while providing answers during an interview on Arise Television that was monitored by the DAILY POST news organization.
His comment is made after US President Donald Trump threatened that he had requested the Defense Department to get ready for potential military action in Nigeria if the Nigerian government “persists in allowing the murder of Christians.”
The PDP loyalist dismissed the issue as being about America’s position, but rather about the failure of the federal government to guarantee safety and transparency.
He criticized the Nigerian government for being unsuccessful in safeguarding its citizens amid what he described as a worrying increase in violence throughout the country.
He said: “Under normal circumstances, Nigerians do not favor foreign intervention. But the main point we must remember is that this situation involves killings in shocking numbers within the country and the failure of the leadership to provide protection for the people—regardless of whether they are Muslims, Christians, or animists.”
