Sports figure Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi urged the appointment of experts, not politicians, to lead Nigeria’s sports sector to fix its declining performance.
She made this call at the first Big Sports Dialogue 0.1 in Ikoyi, Lagos, where stakeholders met to discuss national sports challenges.
Atoyebi said the main problems are a lack of expert leadership and bad infrastructure. She stressed that reforms require quickly fixing these issues.
She reiterated her view that appointed professionals know what the sector needs, can create good plans, execute them, and be accountable, which she sees as key to moving forward.
Atoyebi also insisted that infrastructure must be immediately addressed because transformation needs maintained facilities, citing other nations’ success through modern infrastructure investment.
The media executive criticized the continued poor treatment of women’s sports despite female athletes winning more international awards than men. She wants attitudes to change so that women’s success leads to more institutional support and recognition.
