After a 15-year career with the Super Eagles, during which he became Nigeria’s most capped player and one of the nation’s most accomplished football players of his generation, Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football. In a statement posted on his social media accounts on Wednesday, Musa made the announcement yesterday. “After careful consideration, I have made the decision to terminate my nearly 15-year tenure with the Super Eagles by retiring from international football. “Wearing the green and white meant everything to me from the very first call-up,” he remarked.2010 saw Musa make his Super Eagles debut. On September 5, 2010, at the age of 17, Musa, now 33, made his senior national team debut against Madagascar in the 2012 AFCON qualifying match. He remembers his early years in the national team setup, pointing out that his ascent corresponded with simultaneous invitations to several national teams. “When the voyage began, I was only a young boy. I recall receiving invitations to the Super Eagles, U-20, and U-23 at the same time. Even though I was young, always traveling, and still learning, I never voiced complaints. “I showed up whenever Nigeria called,” he remarked.With 111 games for the Super Eagles, Musa retires as Nigeria’s most capped international. He called the accomplishment a source of pride and accountability. It is a wonderful honor to become the most capped player in Nigerian football history. I knew the responsibility that came with wearing the jersey every time,” he remarked.
