Following her arrest by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) agents, prominent businesswoman and socialite Aisha Achimugu has declared a hunger strike.
According to a previous report by Naija News, the arrest happened at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Tuesday at around five in the morning.
Achimugu’s arrest and subsequent decision to start the hunger strike while in detention were confirmed in a statement by her legal team, which was headed by Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN).
The statement claims that Achimugu was arrested after willingly traveling back to Nigeria from London to accept an invitation from the EFCC, which was related to an ongoing investigation into money laundering and criminal conspiracy.
Ojukwu stressed that Achimugu had already responded to an invitation to attend the EFCC on Tuesday by notifying the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.
“Our client returned in accordance with the court order to accept the invitation from the EFCC, but they were arrested at the airport,” Ojukwu clarified. He added that the arrest went against the fundamentals of the rule of law.
Achimugu was previously listed as wanted by the EFCC in March 2025 due to charges of money laundering and criminal conspiracy.
On Monday, the Federal High Court, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, had ordered Achimugu to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday and again before the court on Wednesday.
In addition to her personal notoriety, Achimugu is well known as a business magnate, serving as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Felak Concept Group.
This consortium comprises companies in various industries, including engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.
