The Speaker of the State House of Assembly should immediately lift the suspension of 13 Assembly members who resisted the purported dismissal of Chief Judge Justice Maurice Ikpambwese, according to the PDP’s Benue State chapter.
According to Naija News, the party claimed that the suspended members responded to the Assembly’s legislative misbehavior and impropriety in February with a laudable sense of patriotism.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Tim Nyor, the party’s press secretary, the suspension was described as unjust and unwarranted, depriving over two million Benue State people of their legitimate participation in the legislature.
The PDP also underlined that this move is a clear transgression of the democratic values that underpin both our shared commitment to democracy and our government.
The party declared that everyone who believes that democracy is the foundation of good governance must vehemently condemn such dictatorial actions.
The statement said, “The Speaker and the Governor should understand that Nigeria is not a military state; democracy thrives when dissenting voices and a range of opinions are respected and allowed to flourish.”
Nyor stressed that it is deeply disheartening and shameful that all relevant judicial bodies and institutions have universally condemned the Assembly’s actions which were evidently orchestrated by the Executive arm of government.
“Yet, the 13 courageous lawmakers, who dared to stand for truth and integrity, continue to suffer the repercussions of their principled stand against bad governance, dictatorship and suppression.
“PDP demands the immediate reinstatement of the suspended members to restore democracy, ensure proper representation, and uphold justice for the people of Benue State,” the statement concluded.
