An attempt to smuggle illegal drugs into the Kuje custodial facility in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was thwarted by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). Samson Duza, the spokesperson for the FCT Command of NCoS, revealed the incident in a statement released in Abuja on Monday.
The suspect, identified by Duza as Njimogu Ikedi, had “concealed substances believed to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive drugs in his clothes while trying to visit an inmate.” Duza said the incident happened at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Saturday during a routine search.
He claims that Christopher Jen, the FCT’s Controller of Corrections, issued the arrest order and that the suspect has since been turned over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, for further investigation and prosecution.
Jen said that visitors with “ulterior motives” should avoid the custodial facility because such acts would always be discovered by watchful officers.
Additionally, he pleaded with the public to help the service rehabilitate and reform criminals for the sake of public safety.
A woman was apprehended trying to smuggle comparable drugs into the same facility over a year prior to the interception.
The woman admitted that she was sent to deliver the drugs to a prisoner inside the facility while posing as a guest and hiding the drugs in food packs.
