Toluwalashe Balogun, an 11-year-old golfer, stole the show at this year’s Golf for Peace competition after winning the overall ladies’ title in the Ikoyi Club 1938 Golf Section.
In the 18-hole competition, Balogun put up an outstanding effort, earning a net score of 66 with a gross total of 90 off a handicap of 24. Abiodun Adesina won the overall championship in the men’s division with a net score of 70 and a gross score of 90 off a handicap of 26.
About 120 golfers from clubs all over the nation, including the host Ikoyi Club, the IBB International Golf and Country Club, and Cross Creek Golf Club, as well as players from Lagos, Bayelsa, Ibadan, and Abeokuta, participated in the tournament’s fifth edition. The Ikoyi Club’s golf area hosted the tournament for the first time this year.
The Golf for Peace initiative was started by Kemi Olowoyo-Otegbade with the goal of using sport to promote harmony, communication, and social effect. She emphasized that the tournament’s larger message of inclusivity and accessibility is reinforced by the appearance of a young overall winner.
Olowoyo-Otegbade stated, “Our goal is to spread love via golf to every Nigerian and even outside of Nigeria.”
Additionally, we are raising awareness of golf as a sport that can be played by men, women, children, and adults. The fact that a young lady won overall makes me very happy. Although young individuals have previously won various categories, this is the first time there has been an overall winner.
Abimbola Ajinibi, the chairman of the planning committee, emphasized the event’s ideology while she went on to highlight the tournament’s cooperative efforts. We utilize what we refer to as a non-kinetic strategy, which avoids the use of force, to address insecurity and instability. We make an effort to connect with each other and find amicable solutions to issues. There is no other way to advance.
