Barau FC, the newcomers to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), defeated Enugu Rangers 2-0 in yesterday’s week 13 match at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, putting an end to their fears of relegation. Barau FC was ranked second in the 20-club league standings before to the first-ever match between the two teams in the NPFL, but the win put them in 16th place with one game remaining. In the 25th minute, Muhammad Umar gave Barau FC the lead to win the hotly contested match. The hosts had a slim lead going into halftime, but in the 52nd minute, Joseph Kemin headed in Bismark’s beautiful cross to double the lead for the “Maliya boys.”Barau FC maintained their defensive stability while using counterattacking tactics until the referee’s final whistle blew, despite Rangers applying pressure to at least cut the gap. Barau FC’s third victory in 12 games came against Enugu Rangers. Their other two wins were away against Kun Khalifat and against city rivals Kano Pillars. Additionally, they have lost five games and drawn four, including the 0-1 home defeat to Warri Wolves in week seven. On Wednesday, November 19, Barau FC will visit Rivers United, the CAF Champions League winners, in the delayed week five match. Barau FC’s concerns over relegation will be lessened if they defeat Rivers United.
