Veteran Nigerian artist Chinagorom Onuoha, better known by his stage name African China, has talked about how creating conscious music put his life under risk and how he managed to defend himself.
The Mr. President crooner revealed in a recent episode of the Beer Parlor Talk podcast that he formerly studied martial arts and practiced voodoo because the police, OPC, and Area Boys were pursuing him due to his contentious lyrics.
“I have a black belt.” You have to know how to battle to survive in the music industry during my time. To defend myself, I was practicing voodoo in addition to mastering martial arts.
I was creating conscious music, which put my life in jeopardy. I was fleeing Area Boys, OPC, and the cops. Additionally, informants assisted me in getting away from the ongoing dangers. Even when I was performing, OPC constantly attempted to harass me, but the audience always alerted me when they were approaching. OPC believed that I was utilizing voodoo to make myself vanish. “I was constantly on guard,” he remembered.
