The Director General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged global cooperation to address pollution and the challenges posed by climate change. Speaking in Umuahia during the launch of Abia State’s new electric bus fleet, she emphasized the importance of supporting climate-friendly initiatives for the sake of public health. The former Finance Minister praised Governor Alex Otti for making Abia the first Nigerian state to officially introduce electric buses and expressed hope that other regions would adopt similar technology. She noted that while Africa accounts for only three percent of global carbon emissions, the continent must still play its part in improving the global environment. Governor Otti described the initiative as a step toward a zero-emission future and highlighted that the vehicles are designed to be accessible for people with disabilities. He stated that the buses can travel up to 450 kilometers on a single charge and announced that they would offer free transportation on specific routes through early January 2026. Additionally, the Governor mentioned that the buses are equipped with security cameras to monitor and deter criminal activity for passenger safety.
