The Super Eagles have not yet formally named their new captain, and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is just a few days away. This comes after Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong announced their retirements prior to the competition. Even before the 54-man provisional list was reduced to 28, Troost-Ekong was the first to make his announcement. The Al-Kholood defender chose to give the loudest farewell. By announcing his own retirement on Wednesday, Musa also put an end to speculation that he might play for Nigeria.With 111 appearances, Musa continues to be the most capped Nigerian football player and the only player to score in two World Cups. There are rumors that Eric Chelle, the head coach of the Super Eagles, has given his approval for Wilfred Ndidi to take over as captain. Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon will support Ndidi. It remains to be seen if talismanic striker Victor Osimhen will be recruited to that leadership group.
