The Congress of University Academics, CONUA, has declared that it is not part of any ongoing strike in Nigerian universities.
In a statement signed by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the union dismissed social media reports suggesting its involvement in the industrial action, stressing that it had not declared any strike.
Sunmonu reaffirmed CONUA’s dedication to academic stability, excellence, and peaceful engagement with the government to ensure uninterrupted learning. He explained that the union had previously protested its exclusion from the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement, inaugurated in October 2024.
According to him, the protest led to a meeting with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, where the minister promised to include all academic unions in the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee—a pledge that has since been fulfilled.
He noted that none of CONUA’s concerns with the government currently warrant a strike. After a series of nationwide congresses held between September 18 and 24, members unanimously agreed that dialogue, not disruption, remained the best approach for progress in the university system.
Sunmonu encouraged members to continue carrying out their academic and administrative duties diligently and urged Vice Chancellors to protect CONUA members at their workplaces.
He also advised students to stay committed to their studies, assuring them of the union’s continued commitment to quality education, national growth, and industrial peace.
