Convention: Northern PDP consensus chooses former minister Turaki to serve as chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern caucus has endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as its consensus candidate for the role of National Chairman ahead of the party’s convention, scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who serves as the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee, made this announcement on behalf of the northern zone following a meeting of PDP Northern leaders in Abuja on Wednesday night. Governor Fintiri officially declared Turaki the consensus choice, while clarifying that any dissatisfied aspirant retains the right to contest the position.
BASEMEDIA reports that Mr. Turaki is an eminent legal professional with extensive expertise encompassing constitutional law, electoral petition litigation, commercial arbitration, cross-border and international criminal law, intellectual property, oil and gas matters, and mergers and acquisitions. The nominee previously held the portfolio of Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs and also served concurrently as the Supervising Minister of Labour and Productivity during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
It is recalled that the PDP, during its 102nd National Executive Committee meeting on August 25 in Abuja, resolved to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region and the National Chairman position to the North. Subsequently, Northern leaders further micro-zoned the chairmanship slot to the Northwest zone over the preceding weekend.
Governor Fintiri explained that following comprehensive consultations with leaders representing the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Turaki emerged as the unanimous consensus candidate for the position of PDP National Chairman.
He stated: “We have convened this evening to deliberate and finalize a decision on the office of the Chairman of our great party, the PDP, which was specifically zoned to the North. During our meeting, we engaged in deep and wide-ranging consultation, and as we proceed to Ibadan for our national convention, we have adopted a consensus candidate to represent the North, and by extension, Nigeria, as the Chairman of the PDP. That gentleman is K.T. Turaki, SAN. This represents our collective decision this evening, and he is the individual we are presenting at that convention for that position… This is our decision, and we anticipate this will be the alignment of our delegates in Ibadan.”
