The Cross River State House of Assembly has officially cleared Cyril James Omini, the member for Yakurr I, of the serious allegation that he received ₦1.6 billion from a private construction firm working on state road projects.
The exoneration followed a detailed investigation by a Special Committee led by Deputy Speaker Sylvester Agabi. The committee conducted extensive hearings, interviewing key state officials, including the Commissioners for Works and Finance, the State Accountant-General, the construction firm’s Managing Director, and Omini himself.
Omini had “vehemently denied” the claims. After reviewing all the evidence, the Assembly concluded that the allegations were “untrue, unfounded, and baseless,” with no evidence linking Omini to the ₦1.6 billion transaction.
The Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, confirmed that the investigation was a measure of transparency, not a “witch-hunt,” and that the process had fully vindicated Omini, who thanked his colleagues for the opportunity to clear his name.
