Nigerians have joined Okpolupm Etteh, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Eket/ONNA/Esit-Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency, in mourning the death of Muhammadu Buhari, the nation’s immediate past president.
“President Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria, both as a former Head of State and as a two-term democratically elected President, left indelible marks on the nation’s political and economic landscape,” the federal legislator said in a statement he signed and released on Monday.
Etteh called his death a “great loss to Nigeria” and said Buhari was a leader who stuck to his vision for a more powerful, secure, and independent Nigeria despite disagreements about his policies.
He, therefore, called on Nigerians to reflect on the values Buhari espoused, which, according to him, included discipline, patriotism, and anti-corruption, and called citizens to work together in unity to build the “Nigeria of our collective dreams.”
“Our nation has suffered a tremendous loss with President Buhari’s passing,” he said. He was a leader who stuck to his goal of a more powerful, secure, and independent Nigeria in spite of differing opinions about his policies.
But he also prayed for God’s consolation and the quiet resting place of the late President’s soul, sending his deepest sympathies to the family, the administration and people of Katsina State, and the entire country.
Noting that history will always remember Buhari as a brave leader who served with conviction, Rep. Etteh also urged the Buhari family to take comfort in the legacy of honor and duty their patriarch left behind.
