The University of Jos administration has been instructed by Muslim Rights Concern, or MURIC, to cease scheduling events on Fridays during the Jummah prayer period.
The proposal was made by MURIC on Monday in a statement that was signed by Professor Ishaq Akintola, the organization’s executive director.
According to Akintola, the Jos University Teaching Hospital’s Department of Pharmacy has scheduled a lecture on Lassa fever on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 12 to 2 p.m.
He said that the lecture’s timing was provocative and unlawful and that it is a roadblock to peaceful cooperation.
In order to make sure that the Jumu’ah period is neither encroached upon nor sandwiched, Akintola insisted that the university should evaluate the program.
According to an internal memo purportedly from the Department of Pharmacy at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), a lecture on Lassa fever is scheduled for Friday, June 26, 2026, from 12 to 2 pm, according to Akintola. On behalf of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) chairperson, Sitlong Goodness signed the memo.
TheWe at Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) believe that the suggested lecture’s date is excessive. It is unlawful to hold a program in an official capacity during Jumu’ah prayer anyplace in Nigeria. In addition to being controversial, the concept stands in the way of harmonious cohabitation.
The worst-case scenario is more damning since it assumes that either the Department of Pharmacy or the University of Josits itself for all the aforementioned are involved in the ongoing violation of the fundamental human rights granted to Muslim employees and students by Allah.
We recommend that the Department of Pharmacy at JUTH and, consequently, the University of Jos adopt the values of respect for the law and religious tolerance. The quickest path to anarchy is the careless display of irresponsibility with regard to the rights of other religious groups.
