Nasir El-Rufai, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, has revealed how the late former President Muhammadu Buhari helped him become the former governor of Kaduna State.
El-Rufai, who referred to Buhari as his mentor, revealed that the late former president supported him during his 2014 run for governor and helped him win the office.
He made this revelation in a London clinic while lamenting Buhari’s passing.
El-Rufai said in a post on X that Buhari defended Nigeria in both times of conflict and peace.
He described how, following the 2011 elections, Buhari gave him the task of leading the Congress for Progressive Change, or CPC, Renewal Committee.
“I lament President Muhammadu Buhari’s departure,” he wrote. He was a leader who defended our nation in both times of conflict and peace.
It was an honor for me to collaborate with him in the CPC. My mentor in politics was President Buhari. He pushed me to run for Kaduna State governor, supported me by being present at the campaign’s launch in November 2014, and saw me through to the conclusion.
“Even though we rarely disagreed on policy issues, I am incredibly appreciative of his support throughout my time as governor and the exceptional access he provided me.”
