Mr. Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has provided proof of his previous interactions with the late General Sani Abacha.
Obi insisted that he had no political intentions and that his conversation with Abacha was entirely professional.
Obi reiterated in a public statement issued on Wednesday through X that he had never seen Abacha prior to being enlisted in a port decongestion task force.
He clarified that a group of importers and dealers, including himself, had called the meeting because they were worried about the protracted delays in the clearance of products at Nigerian ports.
“As traders and importers, we were all concerned about the protracted delays in clearing products at the ports, which led to our meeting with him. We came to him as concerned citizens looking for workable answers, not as political players,” Obi stated.
He underlined that the engagement’s goal was to promote increased port efficiency and suggest ways to enhance operations for the benefit of the business sector and the Nigerian economy as a whole.
In order to bolster his arguments, Obi published a letter outlining his selection to the task team and restating his long-standing dedication to openness and honesty.
In the interest of truth, he continued, “this clarification is offered to reaffirm that our actions were driven solely by a sense of civic duty and not political ambition.”
Obi acknowledged that the clarification might not sway critics he described as “mischief makers with ulterior motives,” but stated that placing the facts in the public domain was necessary for posterity and to uphold his transparency pledge to Nigerians.
