Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has challenged the Federal Government to be forthcoming with Nigerians regarding reports of a supposed coup attempt in the country.
Falana made this demand on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television.
According to him, the government has yet to provide a clear answer to the reports of arrests associated with the alleged plot.
The legal luminary maintained that transparency would allow the government to earn public confidence and support in its efforts against anti-democratic elements.
He stated, “You know, a lot of conspiracy theories are circulating, and as a lawyer, I can only speak of what I know that are within the public domain.”
He added that the current government is “making more money on the sale of oil,” noting that besides removing fuel subsidies, the government has also managed to “increase oil production in our country.”
Responding to suggestions that the matter was a sensitive security issue, the senior lawyer insisted that details of the arrests were already publicly available, thereby confirming that the arrests had occurred.
He further stressed that the government must tackle insecurity and guarantee the protection of all Nigerians as mandated by the constitution.
It’s a classic case of a human rights lawyer demanding transparency from a government citing “security sensitivity.”
