Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s pledge to assist Nigerian port development. At a meeting with the International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) management in Abuj, Oyetola made this commitment. The visit was a component of continuing discussions meant to strengthen the Federal Government’s partnership with the private sector in furthering Nigeria’s goal for the maritime and blue economyThe minister said at the meeting that ICTSI’s investments in Nigeria’s marine industry, especially in the Onne Multipurpose Terminal, had greatly increased the efficiency of cargo handling and shortened vessel turnaround times. The Federal Government is dedicated to fostering private sector involvement in the marine sector, according to Oyetola, who also mentioned that measures are being taken to alleviate the difficulties that the nation’s ports faceHon. Farouk Adamu Aliyu, Chairman of ICTSI Nigeria, headed the ICTSI delegation, which also comprised Mr. Hans Ole Madsen, Vice President; Mr. Nicolo Scannavini, Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) Managing Director; and Mr. Chidi Nzerem, Director. The meeting’s discussions centered on OMT’s recent operational advancements and examined plans for future growth and efficiency improvement in keeping with the federal government’s goal of a thriving and sustainable blue economy. Oyetola praised ICTSI for its investments and contributions to Nigeria’s maritime development, highlighting the Ministry’s willingness to maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to business and promotes innovation and private sector involvement in the industry. The terminal has a 1,000-meter heavy-lift quay, 45 hectares of yard space, modern warehousing, four new Gottwald mobile harbour cranes, and other cutting-edge equipment. It is built to handle a variety of cargo, including containers, break bulk, project and heavy-lift, and roll-on/roll-off cargoThe first of its kind to dock in West Africa, the Kota Oasis is a Singaporean-flagged, LNG-powered container ship that OMT received in June 2025. The Pacific International Lines (PIL)-operated ship’s arrival demonstrated OMT’s dedication to green port operations and signaled a turning point in the region’s transition to ecologically friendly shipping.
