An early morning fire damaged a minimum of 44 shops and stores located at the well-known Singa Market in Kano State.
The event, which happened around 5:00 a.m. on Monday, was confirmed in a statement issued Monday night by ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer for the Kano State Fire Service.
The statement indicated that the agency received an emergency call from Mubarak Muhammad, who informed the central control room about the fire.
The statement said, “Upon arrival, our personnel discovered that a one-story structure, approximately 150 by 150 feet in size, known as Alhaji Abdulmunafi Yunusa House, was totally engulfed in fire.”
Abdullahi detailed that 25 temporary shops attached to the front of the structure and 19 storage units on the top floor were completely ruined.
Nonetheless, firemen successfully controlled the blaze, stopping it from extending to 24 additional stores on the upper floor, as well as all the shops located on the ground floor.
He mentioned that the rescue effort faced difficulties due to poor road accessibility caused by trailers parked along the path, which hindered movement to the location.
Alhaji Sani Anas, the Fire Service Director, led the responding crew.
During their inquiry, they met with Ambassador Garba Ibrahim Mai Maggie, the building’s head, and Malam Ibrahim, a security guard, who disclosed that the entire structure operated on a single electric switch.
The statement concluded: “Based on our investigation, we found that the switch was not handled correctly, and we strongly suspect that an electrical wiring fault was the cause of the fire, which began in the temporary shops.”
