The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has blasted Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, saying that he is not worthy of his office.
This was after Makinde invoked “Operation Wetie” at an opposition summit in Ibadan, Oyo State last Saturday.
The governor’s comments were characterised by the APC as a careless call for violence.
Recall that Makinde had addressed the national summit of All Opposition Political Party Leaders, warning against what he called a dangerous consolidation of legislative power under a single party.
“For those who continue as though tomorrow doesn’t exist. They ought to keep in mind that this is where “Operation Wetie” got its start. He informed the crowd, “This is the same Wild Wild West.
According to the DAILY POST, Operation Wetie is a Yoruba phrase that alludes to the political violence that swept through Nigeria’s western region, especially Ibadan, in the middle of the 1960s.
Reacting quickly, the APC said in a statement released on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka that it was extremely concerning that a state’s chief security officer and governor would use such a violent historical allusion.
The ruling party issued a warning that the remarks might lead to widespread lawlessness, murderous fury, and chaos.
The party declared that Makinde was “unworthy of the high office of Governor that he occupies by his incitement to violence.”
Therefore, it emphasised that constitutional immunity does not protect public officials from accountability for remarks deemed to endanger national security and urged security and intelligence agencies to take action.
