According to an analysis of the factsheet published by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), at least N12.8 trillion worth of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petroleum, was imported into Nigeria between August 2024 and October 2025 as the country struggles to increase its local refinery. The amount was calculated by adding the average daily litre that the NMDPRA claimed was imported, which came to 15,435,000,000 (billion), using an average landing cost of N829.77 per litre.A breakdown revealed that September 2024, when there was no local manufacturing, saw the largest importation of 1.52 billion liters, followed by August 2024 with 1.38 billion liters and December 2024 with 1.31 billion liters. 1.17 billion liters of the commodity were imported in October 2025, and 1.12 billion liters in November. However, the amount fell sharply to 765.7 million liters in January 2025, although it slightly increased to 770 million liters in February and 889.7 million liters in March.
