The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Northern Nigeria, Rev John Hayab, has clarified the 2020 incident involving Nathaniel Samuel at the Living Faith Church in Kaduna, stating it was a misinformation of facts and not a bomb threat.
Speaking at the funeral of Nathaniel Samuel, who recently died in Kaduna, Hayab explained that the young man had gone to a wedding the previous day with fireworks and could not take them home that night.
Hayab detailed that the boy returned to the church on Sunday morning to retrieve the fireworks and carried them into the church. When he left them to urinate, someone spotted the items and raised an alarm, mistakenly believing it was a bomb.
The police took the fireworks, thoroughly searched the suspect, and later confirmed that the item was not a bomb but fireworks. However, because the incident had become a national issue, the police transferred the boy from Kaduna to Abuja.
Hayab noted that after a complete investigation, the police found no incriminating evidence and released him.
The CAN chairman stressed the need for people to be thorough to avoid unjustly causing pain to innocent individuals. He further explained that after Samuel’s release, it was discovered he had a drug problem and needed rehabilitation. Hayab helped the young man enter a rehabilitation center and later placed him in a mechanic shop to learn a trade.
Hayab said he agreed to conduct the burial because of his deep involvement in the young man’s rehabilitation until his death. Representatives from the Living Faith Church also attended the funeral, confirming Nathaniel Samuel was a member of their Kaduna church.
