In Benue, soldiers apprehend suspected terrorists and retrieve weapons

During a pre-wet season clearance operation in the Agasha axis of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) apprehended three suspected terrorists and found an AK-47 gun and ammo.
In a statement released on Friday, OPWS spokesperson Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu stated that forces from COAS Intervention Battalion XI conducted the operation on March 26, 2026, in response to reliable information about the presence of suspected criminals in the region.According to Zubairu, the forces successfully captured the suspects, who were identified as Abdulkareem Haruna from Jos, Plateau State, and Sule Ibrahim and Salmanu Risko from Nasarawa State, after making a tactical advance and cordoning off the area.
One AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and 27 rounds of 7.62mm x 39 ammunition were among the goods he claimed as being recovered from the suspects.A Tecno cell phone, a cutlass, ten alcohol sachets, and several charms were among the other goods.

According to him, the suspects are being held in military custody while a preliminary investigation and possible prosecution are conducted.

The operation was part of continuous operations to secure rural areas before the rainy season, the OPWS spokesperson continued, adding that troops had maintained an aggressive stance to deny criminal groups freedom of action throughout the state.

Major General Moses Gara, the Force Commander of Joint Task Force OPWS, praised the soldiers for their professionalism and tenacity in protecting people and property inside the joint operations area.
